Imagine what life would be like without the internet, especially if you’re a cheater. No seriously, think about it. Technology makes life so much easier for people who like to cheat that it’s actually created entire industries, like security software, etc., that aid in the cheating process. If you’re like us – and Al Gore – and can remember the days before the internet, you may recall a time when cheating didn’t seem so commonplace. In fact it was frowned upon, which is in staunch contrast to how commonplace, and even normal, it is today. Maybe that’s because there are just so many ways to cheat online. Take these ten ways, for instance:

Homework Assignments – Right now a child can log on to their computer and find a dozen websites within 10 seconds where they can get someone else to do their homework or write their paper for a fee. We’re not talking about tutors, mind you; we’re talking about cheaters for hire.

Drug Tests – There are also sites online where you can purchase some magic potion or another that will get your urine to pass a drug screening test. For those who would prefer not to entrust their careers to the amateur chemist, there is always someone who will sell their own urine sample to you, to use as you see fit.

Dating Sites – Now, thanks to the World Wide Web, we have venues like this where professed cheaters can actually congregate and meet one another. Adulterers rejoice, you need no longer roam the streets aimlessly or cruise the singles bars in search of opportunities to cheat on your spouses.

Chat Rooms – Of course there are always the more conventional venues for cheaters to visit for their trysts. Funny how even this method seems almost quaint and outdated by comparison. Nevertheless, it’s a popular choice for the unfaithful among us.

Filing Taxes – Another popular form of cheating – tax fraud – can be conveniently accomplished online electronically. Of course cheaters will need to also electronically sign a statement asserting that they have provided truthful information, but a cheater can – and probably will – still cheat.

Plagiarism – This popular form of cheating (more specifically, theft) has become quite common on the internet. Public access to such an abundance of content has led to frequent instances of copyright infringement. Speaking of which …

File Sharing – Again, this type of cheating involves theft. Downloading content (audio, video, text, images, etc.) that is protected by copyright is just another way of cheating someone else out of their due compensation.

Surfing at Work – When employees use company time and resources for personal use, that’s cheating. You are cheating your employer out of an honest day’s work when you’re cruising non-work related internet sites. And if you’re checking out prospects on that adultery dating service, then double damn you.

Video Game Cheat Codes and Walkthroughs – Whether it’s the difficulty level of today’s video games or our growing impatience and need for instant gratification that is to blame, there is a whole cottage industry online for cheating – and as a leisure activity, for crying out loud.

Prescription Drugs – You would have to have been living under a rock for the past twenty years not to have seen the ads. Prescription drugs available without a prescription for problems such as aiding men with erectile dysfunction. So basically men are cheating once to get the pills without a script, and then a second time by taking them.

The possibility of winning big keeps people signing up for online contests, despite the fact that many prove to be scams. Before you click that link and add your personal information to that form, here are some tips for spotting a scam contest.

Payment Required to Claim Prizes – Winners of legitimate contests or sweepstakes will never be required to pay a fee to receive their winnings. Service fees, processing charges or shipping and handling fees are all signs that a contest is fraudulent.

Check Out the Email Address – Contests sponsored by large companies or well-known organizations will send notification emails from an official email address. Emails that originate from a free service like Gmail or Yahoo! should be considered a red flag.

Typos and Grammatical Mistakes – An email rife with spelling problems and typos is a sure sign of fraud. Sponsors of legit contests are trying to promote their brand; they would never allow such unprofessional correspondence to be sent out.

Non-Disclosure Agreements – Contests and sweepstakes are, at their heart, promotional tools. They exist to raise brand awareness, so if you’re urged to keep your winnings a secret for “security reasons,” you should be suspicious.

High Pressure to Act Quickly – Scammers will urge “winners” to act quickly, in hopes that they won’t take the time to do a web search or find information that will prove them fraudulent. Even time-sensitive prizes will allow winners enough time to do some research.

You’ve “Won” a Contest You Didn’t Enter – Entering a passel of contests can sometimes create confusion, but you should always keep track of which contests you’ve entered. One of the first warning signs of a scam contest is a win notification for something you never entered.

Receiving a Large Check in the Mail With Notification – Fake checks can be so convincing that even bank tellers are fooled, but contest sponsors will not send a large check by mail along with your winner’s notification. Before a check is cut and mailed, especially for amounts more than $600 USD, sponsors will require an affidavit.

You’re Instructed to Wire Funds – Wire services like Western Union are almost as difficult to track as cash; as a result, many scammers will request that “processing fees” be paid this way. Even if there is an entry fee for a legitimate contest, they won’t require money to be sent via wire service.

Sender of Win Notification Doesn’t Use Your Name – The people running scam contests send out thousands of emails, knowing that most will be ignored. Instead of personalizing each email, generic greetings like “Dear Sir” are favored.

Clumsily Worded Notification Emails – Because the majority of fraudulent contests originate overseas, those sending the emails are likely to speak English as a second language. Even if all of the words are spelled correctly, they may be used improperly or phrased awkwardly. Notifications from legitimate contests will be written clearly, usually at a college level.

Falling victim to a contest scam is potentially devastating. The best case scenario is that your email inbox will be flooded with spam; the worst is money lost to fraudulent fees and even identity theft. Running a quick Google search with the name of the contest is another quick way of checking for legitimacy; scams will often return results for consumer alert sites and fraud watch services.

Imagine being able to say you were there, when these horses, 10 of the fastest horses throughout history ran to become the winners that they are:

Man-O-War: Man-O-War was foaled in 1917 and is said to have rescued American horseracing in the 1920’s. He started racing in 1919 and won three stakes races in just 17 days. In his two years of racing, Man-O-War won 20 of his 21 races, one of which he won by 100 lengths. His speed records may have been broken over the years but for his day, Man-O-War held five American records at various distances and was considered a national hero when he was retired. After his death in 1947, Man-O-War was voted the greatest thoroughbred of the first half of the 20th Century.

Phar Lap: Measuring 17.1 hands, Phar Lap was a huge, New Zealand-bred horse that was foaled in 1926. His name means “lightning” in Thai, and he was like lightning on the track! He won 37 of his 50 races and set eight different track records, one of them for running in the Agua Caliente Handicap in Mexico. This race was the first race for Phar Lap on a dirt track, and it would prove to be his last race. He died shortly thereafter from a mysterious and sudden illness. At the time of his death, Phar Lap was the third highest stakes holder in the world

Seabiscuit: Seabiscuit, of the 2003 movie fame, was foaled in 1933, the “grandson” of Man-O-War. During his first two years of racing, however, he failed to live up to the expectations of his fine parentage and was sold. With a new trainer and another year of maturity, Seabiscuit started winning, and continued winning for several years. He beat War Admiral in 1938, and was named Horse of the Year. Throughout his career, he set records in four Handicaps and was named Champion Male Handicap Horse. Seabiscuit won several “come back” races after being out for an injury before being retired in 1940.

Citation: During his first year of racing, Citation won eight of his nine races and was named Champion Two Year Old. Because of his winning record, Citation is ranked Number three in the Top 100 US Thoroughbred Champions of the 20th Century. His claim to fame includes being the eighth American Triple Crown champion in 1949, and the first to win 16 major stakes races in a row. Citation won 27 of 29 races in his three year old season and had a 15-race winning streak in 1950 that earned him the honor of Horse of the Year.

Big Racked: Not necessarily the winning-est horse, but Big Racked was the fastest horse ever recorded. While running in a quarter mile race in Mexico City on February 4th, 1945, Big Racked reached the speed of 43.26 MPH.

Kelso: Kelso is listed 4th in the U.S. thoroughbred champions of the 20th Century. His long list of honors and awards is still impressive today. His racing career spanned eight seasons and he had the highest monetary winnings of any horse. This record held true for 14 years.

Dr. Fager: In 1968, Dr. Fager had the greatest single racing seasons by any horse in the history of horse racing and the only horse to ever hold four titles in one year. In his three years of racing “The Doctor” ran in 22 races winning 18, placing in two and showing in one. His record run was a mile at Arlington Park, IL, with a time of 1:32.2. His record still stands for dirt track racing.

Secretariat: One of the most well-known race horses, Secretariat holds the record for the fastest Kentucky Derby ever run. At 1:59.40, his time is also recorded as the track record for the 1 1/4 mile distance at Churchill Downs. He went on to win the Triple Crown and was named Horse of the Year as well as Champion 3-year-old for 1973. He ran the 1 1/2 miles at Belmont, 2:24 and reached the speed of 37.5 mph and won the race by 31 lengths. His Belmont time has not yet been broken.

Sham: This American thoroughbred, foaled in 1970 was one of the fastest horses in the 20th century. With multiple wins honors and awards, his racing career was second only to his peer, Secretariat.

Fusaichi Pegasus: Fusaichi Pegasus is known for running the 8th fastest Kentucky Derby of all time. He won the race in 2000 with a final time of 2:01.12 and is now listed as the 6th fastest racehorse in the world.

These 10 horses have set a high standard for up and coming horse racing. Their speed and performances will only add to the excitement when a record is broken, and fans will be able to say, “I was there; I saw it happen!”

We have all heard of horse races and dog races, but what about camel races? Some people have gotten quite inventive when thinking of a new hobby or sport. Whether these events started from boredom or the planning of a festival, the following list of ten most unusual animal races has provided much entertainment around the world.

Camels. Saudi Arabia is the home to professional camel racing where people place large wagers on the outcome of the race. Camels are also raced in Australia and India. Unlike their horse counter parts, camels are not so obliging when it comes to racing. They tend to sit down and not get back up and sometimes they even leave the track. They also tend to live up to their reputation of spitting and biting during the races as well.

Cockroach. Queensland, Australia is the home to cockroach racing. Held on Australia Day, the race takes place inside a ring, where they dump a bucket of cockroaches in the middle and the first one to reach the edge of the ring wins.

Cows. Not just for tipping anymore, cows are raced the second Sunday of February in Mount Compass, Australia. It takes a team of two people to race each cow, one to ride and one to keep the rider from falling off.

Crabs. Quite popular in Sydney, Australia, crab racing generates a rowdy crowd. One pub runs the races every Wednesday to help people get over hump-day mid-week. Competitors purchase a crab, give it a name and set it off amongst the others.

Dogs. Not the usual run around the track race, the Scotland Island 500 in an aquatic dog race held annually in Sydney, Australia. The first race took place in 1973 between two ferry captain’s dogs.

Hamsters. Much more popular than one might think, hamster races are even a betting event in the United Kingdom. Hamsters are placed in miniature vehicles specially fitted with a running ball attached to it.

Lizards. Another unusual race in Queensland, Australia, lizards are raced each year between August and September. Similar to the cockroach races held earlier in the year, lizards are placed in the middle of a ring and the first to reach the edge of the ring wins.

Pigeons. Homing pigeons set off to find their way home from a certain set distance away. This sport is taken very seriously, and pigeons are specifically bred and trained for the race which can be up to 1000 km in distance.

Rats. In January 2008 a zoo in Tokyo, Japan decided to kick off the coming New Year, which happened to be the year of the rat, with a true rat race. Hundreds of children gathered around to watch this interesting race that seemed to never end. Once the rats reached the finish line they turned around and headed back to the starting line.

Sheep. New South Wales, Australia is the home to the Booligal Sheep Races each year in October. These races originated in the 1990’s and the sheep once even wore costumes.

As you may have noticed the Australians have much pleasure in racing unusual animals, but other countries also enjoy their fair share of the spectacles too. So next time you are sitting around feeling bored and need some entertainment, gather your friends together and some of these critters and have a jolly good time. Who knows you could even start a new tradition with a different animal.

You can find just about anybody on Facebook these days. People are becoming Facebook friends with old classmates, long lost cousins and the neighbor across the street. Teens especially seem to have a tendency to add almost everyone to their friends list that asks. So, if one of their teachers should send them a friend request, they’re likely to accept it. If they randomly came across a teacher’s profile on Facebook, they might also send a friend request too, without thinking much about it. A teacher, however, should give the situation some consideration. There are some very good reasons why a teacher should NOT be Facebook friends with their students.

Privacy – The teacher’s privacy and the student’s privacy are compromised when they become Facebook friends. A student (and that student’s friends) may learn things about their teacher that they otherwise wouldn’t have access to. This could be detrimental in the class setting.

Harassment – Again, this can go both ways. If the relationship between the teacher and the student is not a positive one, or deteriorates in the classroom, Facebook connections could be used to harass one another outside the confines of the school building.

Work vs Home – Teachers often had a hard time drawing a line between work and home. Since Facebook would be something they would use more for their personal lives than their work, becoming Facebook friends with students just further blurs that already fuzzy line.

Favoritism – Since teachers have many different students each day, if they were Facebook friends with some of their students and not others, they would likely be accused of showing favoritism to those students they had befriended on Facebook.

Intimidation – Some students might see a teacher’s Facebook friendship intimidating. They may be hesitant to accept the friendship because of not wanting their teacher to be privy to their conversations with friends. At the same time, they may fear saying no to a friend request from a teacher, for fear that they will offend the teacher and negatively affect the teacher’s treatment of them.

Age appropriate – Since a teacher would be an adult, there may be postings from friends on their Facebook page, which would not be age appropriate content for their students to be reading or viewing.

Bullying – School bullies love to tease other kids about having friendly relationships with their teachers. Being Facebook friends with students may make them a bigger target for that type of bullying from other students.

Prejudice – As much as teachers try not to allow outside knowledge affect their treatment of their students, it still can have a subliminal effect. A Facebook friendship may cause a teacher to see the student in a whole different light than they did in the classroom previously.

Misunderstandings – Online communications are often filled with misunderstandings about what a person meant by something they typed or did online. A teacher/student friendship on Facebook could create more opportunities for these types of misunderstandings.

Expectations – A student who has a teacher as a Facebook friend may expect special treatment from that teacher. The student may also expect the teacher to answer questions regarding assignments and homework via their Facebook friendship, that should be reserved for the classroom.

If you’re a teacher and haven’t given this situation any thought, now is the time to do so. The easiest solution is to simply make it a matter of personal policy to not be Facebook friends with any student at your school. That way, no one can be offended by your rejecting their friend request, and you can’t be put in a position that you may later regret.

10. Randy Johnson–While the ‘Big Unit’ rounds the list at a paltry 102 mph, it’s important to remember that, at 6’ 10”, there was never a more imposing figure that ever took the mound. His success was built upon his consistent speed and the angle of trajectory (given his extraordinary height), making the angle of incidence (point of contact of bat and ball) a near impossible task for a batter.

9. Bobby Jenks–Now residing with two other 100+ club members on the Red Sox (Jonathan Papelbon, Daniel Bard), Jenks is the poster-child for power pitchers. Not only can the man clip at 102 mph, but he throws a very ‘heavy’ ball–a ‘bat-breaker’.

8. Brian Wilson–‘Blackbeard’, also weighing-in at a mere 102 mph, is the go-to guy in the late innings of the reigning champs, San Francisco Giants. His dark, intimidating intensity is only matched by the pinpoint control of his phenomenal flame. His skill defines the title of ‘closer’.

7. Steve Dalkowski–Although he never received a Major League paycheck, it’s only fitting to include him in the list. In the minors, 1958, his speed was measured at a soft 102.2 mph. However, those who faced him, including legend Ted Williams, assessed his unmeasured speed at 110 mph; and possessing little control of his projectile, he was truly a feared presence on the hill.

6. Jonathan Broxton–At 6’4”, 300 lbs., this Georgia native is the foundation of the Dodgers bullpen; and, rightly so, given his propensity to keep his median velocity at, or above, 100 mph. He peaked at 102.5, giving him an earned spot on the list.

5. Mark Wohlers–Most noted for his years as a closer for the Atlanta Braves, this Massachusetts native clocked a verified speed of 102.6 mph. Unsuccessful rehabilitation, post-surgeries, shortened his career but not his notable mention in the club of the Fastest!

4. Joel Zumaya–While being selected in deep rounds of the draft (11th), the Detroit Tigers’ closer has paid-off in huge dividends in stabilizing a formerly erratic bullpen. Quite often, the ‘big heat’ is saved for the job of a closer, but the Tigers like Zumaya’s 103 mph fastball to stop any momentum the opponents may have in middle innings…smart baseball!

3. Aroldis Chapman–The ‘Cuban Missile’ arrived on the scene just a year ago to fill the much needed vacancy in the Reds’ franchise: a ‘beacon’ in a murky clubhouse. Hitting the stage with a 105.1 mph fastball was a great way to get some press-time, even if it arrived in the form of relief. The Reds are now left with the task of building his endurance, expanding his pith repertoire and making him a starter.

2. Bob Feller–‘Rapid Robert’ enjoyed a 20-year stint with Cleveland beginning in 1936. Despite the fact that he threw serious heat (107.66 mph), he had an arsenal of other pitches that were equally lethal. This Iowa-born phenom would surely rank in the Top 5 of the greatest throwers of all time.

1. Nolan Ryan–The ‘Ryan Express’ graced the professional mound for 27 years. With perfect, complex mechanics, Ryan mastered consistency in velocity and was strong and determined enough to sustain this through late innings and a long career. He holds the speed record at 108.01 mph, giving his opponent batters about .06 seconds’ less time to think about what they’re going to do.

There you have them, from number ten to number one. The fastest hands that have ever thrown a baseball in this world’s history.

Without the wealth of information available on the internet accessible at their fingertips, any kid without internet access would be at a great disadvantage in today’s world. Encyclopedias and dictionaries are practically out of date by the time they’re printed. It would be impossible to build a library big enough to hold the data a child has access to for their homework on the computer. Since the internet is constantly being updated, kids today have the most recent information available all the time.

Dictionary – New words are popping up every day and online dictionaries are the only way to keep up. Dictionary.com not only makes it easy to look up the meanings and spelling of words, they have word games, words of the day, thesaurus, translator and many other online tools for kids to use.

Thesaurus – Children who use a thesaurus can greatly improve their vocabulary and writing skills. The online version is much more fun for kids to use and also has daily crosswords to challenge their word skills.

Encyclopedia – Not only are there several encyclopedia options on the internet, any search engine is practically an encyclopedia in itself. Research for any homework topic imaginable is available at any child’s fingertips instead of those dusty, heavy volumes on the bookshelf.

Math – I was amazed by how easy it is to access mathematical help on the internet. Math.com is a great source for kids to do their homework. There’s homework help, math games, calculators, tutoring and many other math tools all just a click away.

Geography – If your child needs help with geography, the internet has a multitude of websites to help them with their homework. Many of them are specifically targeted for kids with interactive games and maps. The world is at their fingertips and any country they want to learn about is only a click away.

Current events – Any online news website can help kids with current events and some are specifically geared for the younger generation. It would be difficult to get more current than the internet for up to the minute information.

Online Libraries – Kids who don’t have easy access to a library can go online for books and research to complete their homework assignments. They can download ebooks and journals on sites with a library format.

History – Of course history is being made very day and the computer can make learning about history much more enjoyable for kids. When they start to do research for their homework assignment, they may find themselves learning about other topics they hadn’t even thought of.

Research – The internet makes research for homework so much easier for kids. All these online tools give them instant access to any information they need to complete any assignment. This frees up more of their time for doing something fun instead.

Help for parents – Children are learning far more than most of their parents ever imagined. By the time kids finish grade school, many parents are feeling pretty inadequate to help their kids with their homework. The internet is an invaluable tool for parents to continue being involved with their child’s education.

Of course, parents will want to have close supervision of their kids using the internet for homework. Just because someone posts something online does not make it accurate. Make sure your children are using reliable sources and are aware of biases and misinformation. Bad information is just as easy to access as the good, so be diligent. Parents also want to make sure their kids using the computer to actually do their homework and not just playing computer games or accessing inappropriate websites. The advantages far outweigh the disadvantages, so the internet is an indispensable tool for kids to do their homework and succeed at school.

I am assuming people who hack into another’s computer are smart. But I’ll never understand how they would call it smart when it is one of the dumbest things I can think of.

Or what about Spam? Why would anyone set around thinking of ways to scam/spam people? Do they have too much time on their hands, or are they just dumb? My mother would say, “Some people have too much time on their hands.” Or she just might say, “Idle hands are the Devil’s pleasure”. Either way, I just can’t visualize people being that mean.

I know, I know. I’ve lived a sheltered life. I remember working in Retail once during a grand opening of a big store chain. We had the correct training on what to do if someone stole merchandise, but never did I dream it would actually happen on my watch. She was a young mother whose baby was in a stroller, and bending the rules I allowed her to take the stroller and a couple dresses into the dressing room. She outsmarted me and my tender heart. I decided I didn’t belong in the retail clothing business, so I didn’t last long. Like I say, I just don’t get it. People who steal, or in matters of the internet SCAM people.

With the computer however, I stay in awe on how we can type a note on my personal PC, and click a button and it appears on the PC of my sister moments later. Not only that but how can I send a picture over the wireless Internet?

I’m just grateful I even have a PC to communicate with areas of the world where I’ll never step foot, however if I stopped to analyze how it is actually happening, I may give up. So I’ve decided as long as someone smarter than me gets it figured out, I’ll just take advantage of the new technology.

I’m not sure if this is on the subject, but there is one thing which has come up several times that is still a mystery. How did Al Gore have anything to do with inventing the Internet?

Some new users have difficulty doing a copy paste, highlight in different areas of the Internet; whether MS Word or other word programs, saving pictures to copy to your picture folder, or even copy a favorite picture to your windows background, the simplicity of it seems to escape some people.

Setting up a web site is said to be a simple feat. There are templates out there that may be user friendly, but unfortunately there are folks like myself who feel we need a computer degree to even set up Facebook, or U-tube or for sure a web page.

Then the getting a web site to the top of the search engines is a mystery. I’ve tried it, but feel I’ve fallen short in all the terminology needed to make a web site that has Search Engine Optimization so that is can easily be found.

I don’t understand viruses. I try to stay away from sites that warn me there is a potential problem. Also I’ve tried to rely on my anti-virus software, but still have had to pay someone with a degree in computers to clean my PC up. Viruses – in life we take an anti-biotic. In computers we fork over $$$ to have someone diagnose and repair a problem that should never have been. It is beyond me.

I really wonder if “freedom of speech” has not gone farther than it was intended. Pornographic sights are one of the multimillion dollar businesses on the Internet. How anyone can take part in a porn site, or even spend money to view one is not something I can wrap my brain around. It seems like there are more import things on which one can spend his/her money.

I’m glad the Internet came in my life time; however I will admit I am limited in the use of mine, because of the wild growth that has taken place every day in the technology world. By the time I almost learned DOS, dos was no more. Windows came alone. Then there were different window programs we upgraded to each time we upgraded our PC.

Whew!

This also makes creating photo calendars easier as well. The internet provides you with plenty of websites to choose from to help you create professional looking photo calendars for your own use, gifts or for fundraising.

Vista Print There are plenty of calendar options to choose from on this site: Wall calendars, desk calendars, poster size calendars, wallet calendars, magnetic calendars and card calendars. Their prizes are very affordable, and they offer plenty of other custom printing options besides their calendars.

They also offer a daily planner calendar that is perfect for either your office or at home.

Shutterfly This is another popular photo upload site, which has the capabilities of creating personalized photo calendars. It only provides options for wall, poster and desk calendars but has lots of design options to choose from for all of those.

MyCalendarMaker Looking for a way to create and print your own photo calendar for FREE? You can do that on this site. They also have paid memberships that allow you to print your calendars without the advertising that appear on the free copies.

Creations by You This site is all about creating personalized items of every kind, so calendars are, of course included. Their online calendar program puts you totally in charge. Start the calendar with whatever month you want. Make a one year or two year calendar. Add dates or leave them out entirely. Select fonts, backgrounds, and all kinds of other custom options.

Mixbook Initially this site was just an online scrapbooking site, but they have now added calendars to their options. With two different sizes of wall calendars and a couple dozen themes to choose from, they started out with some good choices.

CreatePhotoCalendars This site allows you to download their calendar creation software free of charge. There are a couple of advantages to this system. You don’t have to upload pictures to their site, which can be a slow process, and you don’t have to have your photos all selected before you begin creating, since you have access to all the photos on your computer. In addition, you can work on your calendar without being online. When you’re finished, upload the calendar to the site for publishing.

Lulu In addition to uploading pictures from your computer, the Lulu publishing site also gives you the option of importing your pictures from facebook, flickr, smugbug or photobucket. When you’ve completed your calendar, you can place your order or make the calendar available for sale on the Lulu website.

Kodak Gallery With Kodak’s usually top quality, their calendars are printed on heavy cardstock with premium picture quality. Their calendar styles include a unique accordion style desk calendar.

MyPhotoCreations This is another site that provides downloadable software for the creation of your calendars. For its wall calendars it provides options for both center and top bound calendar styles. It also provides a CD case style desk calendar. This software also can be purchased to enable you to print your calendar pages yourself.
